Those about to commence study to become instructors of national defence education in civil institutions are required to have completed compulsory military service or basic training with the Estonian Defence League.

Study is undertaken via distance learning. On-site study (lectures, seminars, practice lessons, study trips and outdoor camp) occurs during remote students’ on-site sessions at Tallinn University, in the regional units of the Estonian Defence League or in the units of the Estonian Defence Forces.

A student will acquire the competence and readiness to teach the elective subject of national defence education in civilian institutions at the upper secondary school level. Estonia’s military history, the organisation of Estonia’s national defence, and the crises and armed conflicts of today are studied. Furthermore, students study didactic methods required in the work of teachers and education in the armed forces, engage in teaching practice for instructors of national defence education in civilian institutions, and attend a practical outdoor camp.
