Allowances for temporary incapacity for work

The allowance for temporary incapacity for work is a monetary compensation that the Health Insurance Fund pays to insured persons on the basis of a certificate of incapacity for work who forgo social-taxed income due to a temporary exemption from work.

Allowances for temporary incapacity

  • Sickness benefit is a benefit which is paid on the basis of a certificate of incapacity to work to an insured person, who is temporary leave from work. The sickness benefit can apply in the case of falling ill, work accident, traffic accident, or domestic injury.
  • Carer’s allowance: a benefit which is paid to the insured person, who has an ailing child or family member.
  • Maternity benefit: a benefit which is payed to the insured woman on pregnancy or maternity leave.
  • Adoption benefit: a benefit which is paid to the insured person on the adoption of a child under 10 years of age.

You can view the information about the period of your work incapacity certificate under the service Benefits for incapacity for work as soon as your physician has transmitted your electronic work incapacity certificate to the Health Insurance Fund’s database. Information on whether your certificate has been submitted is available by telephon (+372) 669 6630 or 16363 or from Customer Service.

You can view the information related to the processing and disbursement of your work incapacity benefit under the service Benefits for incapacity for work once your employer has transmitted the details of your work incapacity certificate to the Health Insurance Fund electronically. The Health Insurance Fund will disburse your work incapacity benefits within 30 calendar days from the transmission.

The services displays all work incapacity certificates issued within the past three calendar years.

NB! Please note that the Estonian Health Insurance Fund saves only one bank account number per person. Thus the person who has applied for various benefits (benefits for incapacity for work, dental care benefits, additional medicine benefit etc.) and has listed several bank accounts, will receive all due benefit payments to the last account listed.

Check if your bank account number given to the Health Insurance Fund is correct.
