Women and conscript service
Female Estonian citizens, who have acquired at least basic education and are in the age group of 18 to 27, can enter conscript service on their own will. When entering conscript service, attention must be paid to the fact that becoming subject to national defence obligation is a serious decision and a long-term commitment. Women should consider entering conscript service if they see their future profession in the military service.
Entering conscript service
Women who are not subject to national defence obligation must submit an application for entering conscript service to the Defence Resources Agency.
Women who become subject to national defence obligation must consider that they are subject to the obligation until the age of 60 (inclusive), including the obligation to appear at reserve trainings.
Before entering conscript service, a medical commission must be passed to evaluate whether the person’s state of health meets the health requirements of a person liable to mandatory duty to serve in the Defence Forces.
The Defence Resources Agency shall send a notification of the accepting decision at least 90 days before the start of the conscript service. The decision includes the time for entering conscript service and the conscript service unit. A woman who has not appeared at the conscript service unit by the time specified in the decision shall be deemed to have withdrawn from conscript service and they will lose the opportunity to enter conscript service in the future.
