Be IT-conscious – practical advice and guidance

Have you ever wondered how to recognise phishing pages or what a good and secure password would be? Learn how to protect yourself from cyber threats by following the practical guidelines and safety requirements set out below.

Be sure to take the cyber security course at itvaatlik.ee and put your newly acquired knowledge of cyber hygiene to the test.

Passwords and accounts

  • Whenever possible, identify yourself with an ID card, Mobile-ID, or Smart-ID.
  • If you are using a username and password to identify yourself, make sure the password is:
    • at least 12 characters long;
    • contains various numbers and special characters;
    • contains uppercase and lowercase letters.
  • Make sure to use different strong passwords in various environments.
  • Where possible, always use two-factor authentication in (social media) environments.
  • Use a password manager. This helps you to generate a unique and strong password for each website, thus reducing the risk of multiple user accounts being compromised if your one and weak password is leaked.

Phishing

The aim of phishing pages is to steal your data. Phishing pages are created so that the page closely resembles the website of an authentic brand, creating the illusion that you are on a legitimate site.

  • Do not open unknown emails, links, and attachments. If someone you know sends you an unknown or unexpected link or attachment by email, ask for clarification.
  • Do not fall for threatening and urgent emails from unknown senders.
  • Check the exact URL of the website to make sure it is legitimate (google.com vs. g00gle.com).
  • When in doubt, do not enter your personal information or share it with strangers.
  • If you entered your account information on a phishing page:
    • change your account password immediately;
    • log out of all devices where your account has been logged in;
    • make sure two-factor authentication is enabled.

Please note!

  • Regularly back up your files on both your computer and phone.
  • Make sure you have the latest version of the software on your device and that security updates are installed.
  • Install antivirus software on your computer and smartphone.
  • It is safer to use mobile data than public Wi-Fi networks.
  • Try to avoid using shared and public devices. If it is not possible, make sure you always log out after your session.
