Becoming a volunteer for internal security has been made easier

Contributing to the security of Estonia as a volunteer is now easier than ever, as the state portal eesti.ee offers a proactive government service for becoming a volunteer. The service brings together all volunteer opportunities in the field of internal security in one place, providing both a starting point and further guidance on the path to becoming a volunteer.

The service provides a quick overview of how to join the Police and Border Guard Board assistant police officers or volunteer maritime rescuers, assist the Emergency Response Centre in answering calls to the crisis information telephone number 1247, or support the Rescue Services Agency as an assistant explosive ordnance disposal technician or volunteer rescuer. The new solution makes finding information easy and convenient – each opportunity in the service has a description, terms and conditions for joining, steps to take, and training information.

The aim of the proactive government service is to increase the number of volunteers and strengthen the crisis resilience of Estonia. Every new volunteer helps to build a stronger and more resilient community and country, where people come to each other’s aid in everyday life as well as in times of crisis.

However, consolidating information into a central channel is only the first step. In the next stage, a digital application form will be added to the service, making voluntary candidacy even more straightforward – the necessary information will be filled in automatically based on data from national registers. The second stage of legislation will commence in 2026, with development work expected to begin in 2027.

The Ministry of the Interior, the Information System Authority, the Estonian Rescue Services Agency, the Emergency Response Centre, and the Police and Border Guard Board contributed to the creation of the proactive government service. The service is funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility of the European Union.
