Health insurance

Permanent residents of Estonia, persons residing in Estonia on the basis of a temporary residence permit or the right of residence, and persons legally staying and working in Estonia based on a temporary ground for stay for whom a payer of social tax is required to pay social tax are entitled to health insurance. If you are employed or self-employed in more than one EU Member State, you will have health insurance in the country where social tax contributions are paid for you.

Insured persons are divided into:

  • people who pay social tax or for whom it is paid

  • persons equivalent to insured persons (children, pregnant people, pensioners, pupils, students, etc.)

  • persons insured under voluntary contracts

You can check your health insurance details on the state portal eesti.ee, by calling the Health Insurance Fund at (+372) 669 6630, or by sending a digitally signed request via email to [email protected].

People under the age of 19 are insured regardless of whether their parents have health insurance.

A person insured in the Health Insurance Fund who is temporarily staying in a Member State of the European Union will receive the medical care they need under the same conditions as insured persons living in that country. When travelling in the European Union, the United Kingdom, Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland, and Switzerland, you will need to bring your European Health Insurance Card or a replacement certificate.
