The payment of the sickness benefit depends on the reason for the temporary leave:

  • In the event of sickness, quarantine, accident at work or on the road, and any complication or illness resulting from the latter, the worker’s liability is limited to the first three days of sickness, with the employer paying compensation from day 4 to day 8 of illness and the Health Insurance Fund from day 9.
  • In the event of illness or injury during pregnancy, only the Health Insurance Fund will pay compensation from the second day.
  • In the case of an occupational disease, an accident at work (including accidents at work on the road and complications or illness resulting from an accident at work) and injury sustained in the defence of the interests of the state or society and in the prevention of crime, only the Health Insurance Fund pays compensation from the second day of the period of leave.
  • Provision of work for pregnant people appropriate to their state of health.
The Health Insurance Fund will pay the difference between the average salary and the salary paid by the employer on the day before the first certificate for sick leave started.
During the period of lighter work, the employer must pay the pregnant person at least 50% of their salary before the start of the certificate for sick leave for the transfer to lighter work.
If a pregnant person is released from work due to the absence of lighter work, the Health Insurance Fund will pay compensation from the second day.

  • Temporary relaxation of working conditions from no earlier than the 31st day of sick leave.
The Health Insurance Fund will pay the difference between the average salary and the salary paid by the employer on the day before the first certificate for sick leave started.
During the period of temporary relaxation of working conditions, the employer must pay the person a salary of at least 50% compared to the salary before the start of the first certificate for sick leave.

Sickness benefit is subject to income tax.
