EU citizens do not need a residence permit in Estonia, but they shall register their right of residence. An EU citizen shall obtain the right of residence upon registration of his/her place of residence located in Estonia in the population register of Estonia. The document certifying the right of residence of an EU citizen is the ID card.
The right of residence can be either temporary (valid for up to five years) or permanent (with permanent validity).
Family members of an EU citizen from a third country must apply for a temporary right of residence.
Third country nationals and people of unknown citizenship need a residence permit to live in Estonia.
Residence permit can be either temporary or long term (with permanent validity).
If you need any assistance regarding the conditions and procedures of a foreign national living and working in Estonia, contact the migration consultants of the Police and Border Guard.
