Rules regarding crossing the state border

Before travelling, please visit the website of the Police and Border Guard Board for border crossing information and requirements.

You are allowed to cross the border only with a valid travel document. If you are a national of another EU Member State holding an identity card issued by Estonia (as proof of the status of right of residence), you need a document issued by your own country of nationality (either an identity card or a travel document) to be able to cross the border. An identity card issued by Estonia as proof of status is intended solely for domestic use.

If your travel document is lost or stolen while abroad, an Estonian foreign mission (an embassy, a consul) will issue a temporary travel document allowing you to return to Estonia: Estonian nationals are issued a certificate of return and foreign nationals residing in Estonia are issued a permit of return. These documents allow you to return to Estonia; you may not use them to continue travelling. Upon arrival in Estonia, police officers will deposit your certificate/permit of return at the border crossing point.

Information waht to do when your passport is expired or lost can be also found on portal Your Europe.

Document requirement for minors

A minor child must hold a personal travel document issued by their country of nationality, or their data must be included in the travel document of their legal representative travelling with them.

If a minor is travelling independently, it is recommended that they carry the consent of their legal representative (e.g. a document containing the contact details of their representative(s)) when crossing the Estonian state border. For more information on border crossings for minors, please see the homepage of the Police and Border Guard Board.
