Studying to be a teacher of national defence education

For those interested in studying to become national defence education teachers, the Ministry of Defence, in conjunction with Tallinn University, is organising a national defence education teacher course worth 24 ECTS credits.

The Tallinn University national defence education teacher course is intended for teacher training students, as well as practicing teachers and those who would like to start working as national defence teachers. Prospective teachers of national defence education are required to have completed compulsory military service or basic military training in the Estonian Defence League.

Study work takes place in the form of cyclical studies. On-site study (lectures, group discussions, practical lessons, study trips and an outdoor camp) takes place during secondary subject cyclical study session times once per month, on Fridays and Saturdays, at Tallinn University, in Defence League districts, or in the units of the Estonian Defence Forces.

The student will acquire the competence and readiness required to teach the elective subject of national defence education in upper secondary schools and vocational institutions. Topics of study include the organisation of Estonia’s national defence, security and defence policy, internal security and civil protection, along with modern crises and armed conflicts. Also studied are national defence didactics required in the work of teachers, military instruction, along with participation in national defence teacher and outdoor camp field training.

The Tallinn University School of Educational Sciences carries out teaching.
