Compensation of damage for crime victims

Victims of crime are entitled to state compensation if the crime has caused serious damage to the victim’s health or if the victim has died as a result of the crime.

Pursuant to the Victim Support Act, 80% of the material damage is compensated in the amount of up to €9,590 for one victim and all their dependants. To apply for compensation, the police must initiate criminal proceedings.

To apply for the compensation, you must contact the regional customer service bureau of the Social Insurance Board and submit a request for compensation.

Victims of violent crime will be compensated for the following material damage:

  • the cost of restoring the victim’s health;
  • damage to the victim’s spectacles, dentures, contact lenses, and other aids to bodily functions, as well as personal effects;
  • the victim’s funeral expenses;
  • loss of income for the victim and the victim’s carer;
  • damage resulting from the loss of livelihood of the provider of maintenance.

The benefit is paid on the 12th date of every month. If the day of the payment falls on a public holiday or another holiday, the last working day before the holiday is deemed the payment date.
