The aim of probation supervision is to support the fulfilment of sentences and obligations through assistance and supervision, prevent new offences, ensure reparation of harm caused, and help convicted persons manage independently in society. During probation supervision, the probationer lives in the community but must comply with assigned requirements and obligations and cooperate with a probation officer.

Probation supervision begins once the court decision has entered into force. A probation officer is assigned to the convicted person and will contact them to arrange an initial meeting. During the meeting, the functioning of probation supervision is explained, along with the rights and obligations of the probationer and what is expected of them. Initial agreements are also made regarding, for example, the frequency of meetings and how obligations are to be fulfilled.
