Childbirth
Applying for local authority childbirth grants
Many Estonian municipalities pay a childbirth grant when a child is born. Ask the town or municipality where you live for information about childbirth allowances, as the amounts and application processes may vary.
Important to know concerning this step
When the birth of a child is registered in Estonia, the address of the newborn's place of residence is entered in the population register as the address of the mother's place of residence at the time of the birth. This means that the child's place of residence will be derived from the mother's place of residence after the birth, and birth-related benefits and possible gifts will be provided by the local authority.
Contacts
The Ministry of the Interior is responsible for registering the birth of a child, assigning a personal identification code, and entering the child in the population register. It also issues ID cards or passports to children and provides advice on citizenship issues.
