Childbirth
Documentation of Child's Birth
A child born in Estonia is assigned a personal identification number by the healthcare provider that provided delivery care. Once the child’s information has been entered into the medical birth certificate, it is forwarded to the Population Register. After this, the child’s legal representative can submit an application to register the child’s birth at the Vital Statistics Office.
Important to know concerning this step
The application for registering a child’s birth must be submitted within one month from the date of birth. The Vital Statistics Office will make the entry within seven working days after receiving the application. If it is not possible to submit the application within the deadline for valid reasons, the Vital Statistics Office must be notified, and the deadline may be extended to up to two months from the child’s date of birth.
