Childbirth
First visit to the family doctor
A newborn is automatically added to the mother’s family doctor’s patient list. However, if you prefer another family doctor for your child, you can submit an application to the doctor of your choice.
The first contact with the family doctor system usually takes place through a postnatal home visit, carried out by a family doctor, family nurse, or midwife. If the home visit does not take place, you must take the child to the family doctor no later than 14 days after the birth registration. During the first visit, the child’s health, weight, and development are assessed, and parents receive guidance on caring for the baby.
Important to know concerning this step
If a postnatal home visit has already taken place, there is no need to go to the doctor immediately—the family doctor or nurse will provide further instructions. If no home visit was made, the child must be taken to the family doctor within 14 days of birth. At this first appointment, the foundation is laid for the child’s health monitoring, and future check-ups and vaccinations are scheduled.
