Concluding a marriage
Confirmation of time and place
If the marriage application is submitted at a local government office, with a notary or a clergyman on the spot, the time and place of registering the marriage is agreed upon submission of the application. No additional confirmation is required.
If the marriage application is submitted in the e-population register, the official that will register the marriage contacts the parties to confirm the time and place of marriage registration indicated on the application. If required, the official agrees on a new time and place with the couple getting married.
Important to know concerning this step
Before submitting a marriage application, we recommend that you find out from the local government at what times and in what ways (in the hall with guests, in the office without guests, etc.) they conclude marriages. If you plan to get married outside the premises of the local government, for example in a manor or a farm, we also recommend finding out if and under what conditions it can be done. You can find information on the website of the local government.
In the e-population register, the preferred time and place of the marriage can be indicated on the marriage application. The time and place indicated on the marriage application are not guaranteed to the people getting married: it is necessary to wait for the confirmation of the person who concludes the marriage. The convenor of the marriage contacts the parties to be married him/herself.
If the marriage application is submitted in the local government or with a notary or a clergyman on the spot, the time and place for the marriage will be arranged immediately.
In the event that when submitting a marriage application, it turns out that all the necessary data of the parties to be married have not been entered in the population register, or additional documents need to be submitted, such as a marital capacity certificate, the time and place of the marriage may be agreed upon later: after the registry data has been changed and additional documents have been submitted.
The time and place of marriage can be changed up to the date of the marriage. The change request must be submitted in writing to the local government, notary or clergyman to whom the marriage application was submitted, and a new time and place must be agreed upon. Only one of the parties to the marriage can notify of the change request.
In the event that the parties to the marriage do not show up to conclude the marriage at the agreed time and do not notify of their desire to change the time, it is considered that the marriage application has not been submitted. If the couple still wants to get married, they must submit a new marriage application.
Local governments have different rooms to offer. In addition to the office, where guests are mostly not present, there is often a hall or other room where guests can be invited. You can get more information about the rooms offered and the fees for using them from the local government where you want to get married.
Notaries perform marriages in their offices and clergy in their churches or sanctuaries.
Upon agreement with the marriage celebrant, it is possible to conclude the marriage at a place chosen by the parties outside the marriage celebrant’s premises. You can find information about the exact conditions and fees of local governments on their websites, or from the notary or clergy who will conclude the marriage.
