Performing conscript service
Daily life topics
Being a conscript does not mean that your entire life has to be placed on hold. Here is an overview of how you can keep lines open with family and friends, when you can travel home for visits and how to resolve conflicts between your personal life and conscript service.
Important to know concerning this step
Conscripts have the right to meet their family and associates at least once a month at their place of service, unless this is not possible due to military training or the prevention of infectious disease. Units have designated visitation times. You can also communicate via phone, post and internet. Units have open-door days a couple times per year. You can use your mobile phone in accordance with the internal rules of the unit, usually during resting time. In exceptional cases, loved ones can contact the conscript through the duty officer of the unit.
Leave is ordinarily provided for conscripts outside the training periods. In extraordinary circumstances, leave can be provided to take care of essential business (entrance exams for university, picking up identity documents, notary formalities etc.) or for extraordinary events (funerals, serious accidents, the birth of a child etc.).
In general, leave is provided on weekends with a duration of up to 72 hours. On a daily basis, the unit can grant short-term leave with a duration of up to 12 hours.
If a family member of the conscript dies, your platoon leader must be notified. This allows them to arrange support and the necessary administrative procedures. Extraordinary leave can be applied for from the superior for administrative affairs, attending the funeral and the time following the funeral.
If desired, conscripts can receive psychological counselling from the Defence Forces’ psychologists and if necessary, support for various formalities and organizing the funeral from Defence Forces social workers and chaplains.
