Performing conscript service
Mental health, medical care
Every structural unit has a medical centre. This system ensures that all conscripts have access to first-tier medical care. General medical care and dental care are provided by professional healthcare workers in properly furnished and equipped facilities. At the Defence Forces logistics centre’s health centre, conscripts can also get limited non-hospital specialist care.
The Defence Forces also has chaplains, psychologists and social workers who support and assist conscripts during their military service.
Important to know concerning this step
Conscripts with mental health concerns can turn directly to the base’s medical centre and request an appointment with a psychologist.
An appointment can also be requested from the psychologist directly by email or text or by phone call. The conscripts will receive a list of these contact details in their first week of service.
If you would like to talk to anyone else before seeing a psychologist, the social worker or physician on the base is also available.
Chronic health conditions must be reported to the base’s medical centre. The Defence Forces enables compensation of medications and assistive devices if necessary (food supplements are not compensated), and special regimes are determined in cooperation with the unit.
In the event of a need for medications and assistive devices, it is advisable to initially take them with you when you enter service in the interests of smooth adaptation to service. If you have a special diet, information is likewise conveyed through the medical centre’s personnel and the menu can be adapted based on the course prescribed by them, within the limits of possibilities.
Every base has a medical centre that provides both emergency care and first-tier medical care for longer-term conditions and chronic illnesses. If necessary, they are referred to a specialist within the Defence Forces or civilian system.
Medical care is available as often as there is a justified need for it. Emergency care is provided as needed and based on the location, either through civilian first responders or the Defence Forces’ emergency services.
