Pregnancy
Registering as pregnant
I trimester
If you have taken a pregnancy test and the result is positive, the next step is to register your pregnancy. If you are unsure about the result, you may repeat the test after a few days. It is also advisable to retest if the initial result was negative but you still suspect pregnancy.
Once the test is positive, book an appointment with a midwife, gynecologist, or family doctor. At the first appointment, your pregnancy will be confirmed and you will be officially registered as pregnant.
The best time to register a pregnancy is between weeks 6 and 9, as the fetus is usually clearly visible on ultrasound by then. Pregnancy duration is calculated in weeks, starting from the first day of your last menstrual period.
Typically, a pregnancy record is created at the follow-up visit after initial tests and analyses have been completed. This record contains important information throughout the pregnancy, such as weight, blood pressure, test results, and examination findings. Please remember to bring an identification document to your appointment.
You can register and monitor your pregnancy at major hospitals, regional hospitals, or private clinics. Pregnancy care is free of charge for pregnant women at healthcare providers contracted with the Estonian Health Insurance Fund. A list of contracted providers can be found on the Health Insurance Fund’s website under the specialty “gynecology”.
Important to know concerning this step
For general health concerns, contact your family doctor or family nurse. They diagnose and treat most illnesses, provide preventive care, take tests, vaccinate, and offer health advice.
For pregnancy-related health concerns, contact a midwife or gynaecologist.
A midwife is an independent healthcare professional who supports women before pregnancy, during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. Midwives also provide guidance on breastfeeding, parenthood preparation, sexual health, and family planning, and carry out preventive work in women’s health.
A gynaecologist focuses on the prevention and treatment of gynaecological conditions, contraception, and family planning, and provides consultations for women of all ages.
