Pregnancy
Who can benefit from shared parental benefits and parental leave?
III trimester
The birth of a child gives rise to the right to several state benefits and, in some cases, local government benefits. The purpose of these benefits is to help families cover the costs associated with raising a child and to support everyday living.
Birth grant is paid for each newborn child after the birth has been registered. The amount of the grant is 320 euros per child. In the case of triplets or a larger multiple birth, the grant is 1,000 euros per child. The grant is also paid to adoptive parents, guardians, and foster parents if the same child has not previously received a birth grant.
Child allowance is paid for each child until the child reaches the age of 19, or until the end of the academic year if the child is studying. The amount is 80 euros for the first and second child and 100 euros for the third and each subsequent child. The allowance is paid to a parent or guardian.
Single parent child allowance is intended for a child whose birth record does not include the father, whose other parent is wanted by authorities, or whose personal identification code is missing from the population register. The amount is 80 euros per month per child, paid until the child turns 19 or until the end of the academic year if the child is studying.
Large family allowance is paid to families raising at least three children who are entitled to child allowance. For families with three to six children, the allowance is 450 euros per month. For families with seven or more children, the allowance is 650 euros per month. The allowance is paid to one parent, guardian, or foster parent.
Allowance for triplets and larger multiple births is intended for families in which triplets or more children are born at the same time. The allowance is 1,000 euros per month and is paid until the children reach 18 months of age.
Allowance for a conscript’s child is paid if one of the child’s parents is serving compulsory military service or alternative service. The allowance is 900 euros per month per child and is paid for the duration of the service.
Adoption allowance is a one-off benefit paid to an adoptive parent. The amount is 320 euros per adopted child, provided that a birth grant has not previously been paid for the same child.
Allowance for a child under guardianship is intended for a child raised by a guardian. The allowance is paid until the child turns 19, or until the end of the academic year if the child is studying. The amount is 240 euros per month per child.
In addition to state benefits, families may also be eligible for local government birth grants and other family benefits. The amount and payment conditions are determined by each local authority. For more detailed information, contact your local municipality.
