During peacetime, the point of contact between the government and persons in reserve is the reservist training and additional reservist training – i.e., reserve service. The purpose of participation in the reservist training is to refresh and build on existing knowledge and to allow the unit or units to practise interoperating. If necessary, the reservist training also presents an opportunity for the unit to introduce new weapons and equipment to its reservists.

In addition to the foregoing, the additional reservist training also checks the wartime unit’s mobilization readiness. It is thus very important for all persons who have received a corresponding call-up to take part in reserve service, since structuring military national defence based on persons in reserve is Estonia’s best way of countering potential external risks and the most cost-effective way of providing as large a share of citizens the training necessary for national defence.
