Technical aids and medical devices are products or equipment that can be used independently at home and that help to improve or maintain a child’s daily functioning. Some of the equipment can be rented; others can be bought. The specific technical aid a child needs depends on their medical condition and special needs.

A technical aid is a product that helps to improve a person's ability to function, compensate for functional impairment and achieve or maintain the most independent coping in everyday life. The need for a technical aid is identified by a physician or specialist. Technical aids can be purchased at a state discount from technical aid stores and pharmacies that have a contract with the Social Insurance Board.

A medical device can be used to treat illnesses and injuries or to prevent a disease from worsening. The need for a medical device is determined by the attending physician. The Estonian Health Insurance Fund reimburses medical devices used independently at home.
