The defence resources agency will conduct two call-ups for conscript service per year. Conscript service lasts 11 months.
The number, time and units for conscripts to be called into service is determined with a regulation by the minister of defence. Information about the different options and units is provided by the consultant at the assessment of state of health. The soldier’s basic course, e.g. the first two months of service, is conducted on the same basis in all units. After that, your service is based on your skills, knowledge and experiences. You can mention your preferences at the assessment; efforts are generally made to find everyone a suitable place of service. You can find the descriptions of the units here.

Whether you are called into service and the time of service are decided after the medical examination. The decision will take your preferences into consideration, if possible. The decision will be sent to your Eesti.ee e-mail address and to kaitseväeteenistus.ee. Typically, you will also receive a notification via text message.
You can submit your preference for place of service at kaitseväeteenistus.ee.. You will be informed about your place of service and the time of appearance at least 30 days before the start of conscript service. Read more under “Conscript service notification”.
You can be granted deferment for entering into conscript service: due to temporary noncompliance with the requirements; in relation to maintenance obligation; and for acquiring education. You will generally have to submit an application for deferment to the defence resources agency.
You can submit the application at the Defence Forces Service web interface. Read more about the different options for applying for deferment here.
Alternative service is the non-military training or service of a person, who has refused military service for religious or ethical reasons. The call-up for regular alternative service is carried out on the same bases as the call-up for conscript service and the alternative service lasts for 12 months. See more here.
